La spiranthe odorante (Spiranthes cernua) est une orchidée terrestre originaire de l'est du Canada et du nord des Etats-Unis, où elle pousse dans les prairies et les sous-bois, souvent près de l'eau ou dans les marais et les tourbières. Elle fait preuve d'une excellente rusticité (-20 à -25°C).
La spiranthe odorante produit des racines tubéreuses charnues et des rosettes basales formées de feuilles. Après disparition durant l'hiver, les feuilles réapparaissent au printemps à l'issue de la floraison : elles mesurent de 5 à 25cm de long pour 1,5cm de large maximum, sont presque linéaires et effilées.
A l'automne, lorsque les feuilles disparaissent, se dressent des hampes florales rigides pouvant atteindre 50cm de hauteur, sur lesquelles se développent des grappes spiralées composées de fleurs de 2 à 5 mm de long, blanches, presque translucides, à cœur jaune, délicatement parfumées de notes vanillées. Après pollinisation par les insectes, elles laissent place à des capsules contenant des graines.
