Cette orchidée de 20 à 30 cm est reconnaissable à la forme et à la couleur de son labelle (pétale inférieur modifié). Ce dernier est trilobé, légèrement découpé sur sa partie inférieure et bordé d’une large bande jaune vif et glabre. Son centre est brun-rougeâtre et pubescent et présente 2 taches plus claires dans sa partie supérieure. Les 2 autres pétales sont vert-jaunâtre et plus petits que le labelle. Les 3 sépales (à l’extérieur) sont verdâtres, le supérieur étant voûté (afin de protéger les pollinies : petites masses de pollen en boule). Les fleurs sont réparties en épi, au nombre de 2 à 7 par tige et font un angle de 45° par rapport à cette dernière.
Ophrys lutea affectionne les pelouses sèches et les bois clairs.
L’ophrys jaune a une aire de répartition méditerranéenne à sub-méditerranéenne, on la retrouve en Midi-Pyrénées dans la plupart des départements, bien qu’elle soit encore peu observée.
